Are you looking for a church to worship the Risen Savior this Easter, then come and join us at Central Wesleyan Church in Bloomington, IN.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 I have learned that it is not only important to mean what you say, but it is just as important to say what you mean. I remember a story about Yogi Berra, who was sitting up on a platform with the wife of the Mayor of New York City. He and his teammates (the New York Yankees) were being honored for winning another World Series and the Mayor's wife looked over at Yogi and said, "Yogi, you look really cool today." Yogi looked over at her and said, "You don't look so hot yourself!" We need to say exactly what we mean and mean exactly what we say, then we’ll never miscommunicate what people need to hear and what people need to know. I want to share a message that will save your life. The message is what the Bible calls - The Gospel. I Prioritize the Message of The Gospel Now listen to what Paul says, “Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you..." (1 Corinthians 15:1). Even here in the 1st century there is a need to clarify what the Gospel is. Verse 2, "You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message, I proclaimed to you..." (I Corinthians 15:2). The Gospel is so important. It is how you are saved. We must hear the Gospel and respond to it. Paul went on to say in verse 3, "For I deliver to you as of first importance what I also received." (I Corinthians 15:3. The most important message of the church is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The church’s mission is determined by its message and it determines our mission. What is that message? The Gospel. What is the mission? To spread the Gospel. May God help me to clearly present the Gospel message while leaving the hearer with a chance to respond. Amen. II Recognize the Meaning of The Gospel Paul said, "I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you." (I Corinthians 15:1), and he lets us know that there are three parts to the Gospel. "For I have delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures." (I Corinthians 15:3). People die every day. The reason why His death stands out above every other death in history is that He died for our sins. He died as a Savior. There’s a second part of the Gospel, which is this, "And that He was buried." (I Corinthians 15:4. You may think that’s a small detail, but it really isn't. It is there to show that Jesus really did die and He was buried. Paul added a phrase at the end of verse 4, "According to the Scriptures" (I Corinthians 15:4). That phrase is there for those who would deny the resurrection of Jesus. If you are going to deny the resurrection, you either have to deny that He was raised or you have to deny that He was dead. Jesus died and was actually buried. There is a third part to the Gospel that cannot be left out, "He rose again the third day." (I Corinthians 15:4). How do we know that He died for our sins and how do we know that God accepted His death for our sins? Romans 1:4 says, "Jesus Christ our Lord was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised Him from the dead." (Romans 1:4). When you share the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that is when you have truly shared the Gospel message. God has not asked us to spread a rumor. God has asked us to bear witness to a historical fact, that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. III Emphasize the Might of The Gospel Why is the Gospel the most important message in the Bible, of the church, and of the Christian? It is because this message alone has the power of salvation. Romans 1:16 states, where the Apostle Paul said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." It has the power to take a person from sin to salvation, from hell to heaven, from deadness to life and from darkness to light. "It is by the Gospel that we are saved. Call upon the name of the Lord to be saved. If you do it with a surrendering heart to Jesus Christ, you are doing it as a sinner, and praying to a Holy God. Don’t delay, do it today!
